Fellow Patient (1)

He fell from a quite height and passed out. He recovered consciousness to find that he could not move his legs. The doctor told him that he broke his spine and numbness in his lower body would be permanent

My fellow patient (whom I call Sato-san) never looks depressed in spite of the hardship he must face for the rest of the life. Sato-san told us how he peed with the help of a tube despite the fact that he never had a desire to urinate. He told us how strange it was to see blood oozing out of a cut on his leg after having hit it somewhere without feeling any pain. His stories would have been creepy, had not he told them cheerfully, putting punch lines in between.

I sometimes get glimpses of Sato-san rubbing his legs on the bed with silent sorrow in his face. He knows his future is not bright, but hardly let other people show sympathy for his misfortune.

“If I look depressed, what my family members should do. I want them to be happy with me,” he once said. Great man!

Christmas went miserably. New Year holidays went miserably. And so will Golden Week. I will probably be discharged from the hospital someday after Golden Week. I didn’t expect my stay at the hospital would last this long.

“Walk just a few steps,” said the doctor. It was the first time I tried to walk without crutches. Although I’ve had to use them whenever I move for four months, I thought I would be able to walk quite easily without them, if only I’m allowed to do so. I moved my right leg forward, and found I could not put my weight on it. I was afraid of the prospect of braking my leg if I stood on it. Walking had never been so scary until that time.

About the Accident

You may think it was quite unlucky to be hit by a car when you were just standing on a sidewalk. Yes, unlucky, yet it happened to me anyway. I remember seeing the car rushing toward me in my peripheral vision, but that is all I remember. The crash was strong enough to make me lose consciousness. The next thing I saw was a doctor stitching up my ripped legs. He said I broke my bones in four places, my right knee was heavily damaged and cracks in my lower spine might cause paralysis. I was forced to be bed-ridden for more than a month, unable to rise, go to the restroom, eat by myself and even turn over. The drivers visited me a few times, very apologetic each time. However sorry they say, they will forget about the accident eventually. It is me that have suffered and will suffer most, even though I did nothing wrong.
